*PSG Alpha Investments (previously Paladin Capital Limited) was delisted from the JSE (AltX) in 2011 following its unbundling of Curro and the subsequent buy-out of the Paladin minority shareholders by PSG. Paladin minority shareholders realised a compounded annual return of 43% since listing in 2009. Paladin Capital was re-branded as PSG Private Equity in 2012 and as PSG Alpha in 2017.
Nico de Waal (CEO)
Nico de Waal holds a B.Eng (Mech) Cum Laude degree from the University of Stellenbosch as well as an MBA from IESE Business School of the University of Navarre (Spain). Nico started his career as an engineer with Baker Hughes Inc. (USA) in Scotland and the Middle East in the oil and gas exploration industry (1998-2000). He then specialised in strategy and operations work as a management consultant (2001-2007) before joining SAB Miller (2008-2010) in a strategic marketing role. Nico joined the PSG Group in 2011 and is currently the CEO of PSG Alpha Investments.
Alex began his career with Sasol Limited and worked as chemical engineer at the company’s operations in Sasolburg and Secunda. With a keen interest in business, Alex moved to Sasol Synfuels International in Rosebank as a business and investment analyst where he conducted business intelligence, market research and investment analysis for Sasol’s international coal and gas to liquids expansion projects. In 2008, Alex was seconded to Sasol’s joint venture operation in Qatar to establish the business development function at this gas-to-liquids company, where he was responsible for managing a capital projects portfolio of US$50 million per annum, strategy development & implementation and managing feasibility studies for expansion projects. In 2011 he moved to the private equity sector when he joined PSG Alpha Investments.
Dries completed his articles with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Cape Town Financial Services practice and qualified as chartered accountant in 2009. Dries was Financial Director of mCubed Holdings Limited between October 2010 and February 2011 and Financial Director of Capevin Holdings Limited between April 2012 and November 2013. He has been employed by the PSG Group since 2010 and acted as secretary to the PSG Group Exco before joining the PSG Alpha Investments team full time in 2012.
